Tavernier is not an island, or a key as we call them, but rather it is an area that centers around Tavernier Creek and spills over north into lower Key Largo and to the south on Plantation Key. There is a broad mix of housing in this part of the Keys, from multi-million dollar waterfront homes to modest neighborhoods of "Conch" style houses. Although development has altered the small town nature of Tavernier somewhat, there still remains a sense of the old Keys. Historic buildings share space with condominiums and sprawling estates, schools and shopping strips.
This is also the home of one of our greatest treasures, the Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center. No trip to the Keys is complete without a visit to this amazing place.
